Princess Grace’s Half Sis Scores First Time Out

Published

on

This column highlights the performances of maidens who have made no more than five starts and who either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, have siblings that are graded/group winners, or have dams that are graded/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners, in particular, who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners.

Churchill Downs

John and Susan Moore’s Masquerade added another winner to her sparkling resume of offspring when Mixologist  opened her account in late-running fashion June 9 at Churchill Downs.

Mixologist, a 3-year-old daughter of Frosted  , is the youngest of Masquerade’s three foals to race. The Silent Name   mare’s first runner, Princess Grace , rolled to six graded stakes scores and three grade 1 placings for the Moores before dropping the hammer to China Horse Club for a cool $1,700,000 at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Under her new ownership, Princess Grace departed to the Southern Hemisphere for an Australian campaign. The millionaire race mare was runner-up twice at the group 1 level there last year.

Masquerade’s second foal was the talented but ill-fated Catnip. The Kitten’s Joy gelding, raced under the Moore’s colors, showed the potential to be one of the country’s top turf horses in 2024 after a huge third-place showing in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1T) in January. Catnip then journeyed to Meydan for the prestigious Dubai Turf (G1T), where he sustained a fatal injury during the race 100 yards from the wire.

On the heels of Princess Grace’s success in 2022, bloodstock agents Alex Solis II and Jason Litt secured Mixologist on behalf of LNJ Foxwoods for $175,000 at that fall’s Keeneland September Sale. Following in the footsteps of her older half siblings, Mixologist was late making her racetrack debut when she lined up as the third choice in the field of 12 fillies and mares in Sunday’s one-mile turf maiden special weight.

Guided by Florent Geroux, Mixologist ambled along in tenth early outside of horses before progressing willingly down the backstretch. Sixth into the run for the far turn, the dappled gray appeared beaten midway down the stretch until edging into the clear at the sixteenth pole, driving past a stubborn race favorite Deep Satin  for a neck victory.

Mixologist, trained by Brad Cox, stopped the timer in 1:37.25 on a firm turf course.
