Orillia OPP investigating an online gambling operation – Huntsville Doppler

Members of the Orillia Detachment’s Major Crime Unit (MCU) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently investigating an online gambling operation within Orillia secondary schools.

In April of 2024, Orillia MCU began an investigation after receiving reports of an online gambling operation. It was reported that individuals were offered the opportunity to take part in the operation by signing up on a website. Once becoming an active member of the “Topbets” website, individuals were able to place sports bets and play casino-based games. It was brought to police attention by students that they were being threatened due to outstanding debts owed. Investigators believe there may be more victims and are seeking to speak to anyone who can assist in the investigation. If you wish to speak to an investigator about this, please contact the Orillia OPP at 705-326-3536 or via the Provincial Communication Centre at 1-888-310-1122.

If you or someone you know are struggling with gambling addiction, there are resources to help. Visit www.olg.ca/en/findinghelp.html or call ConnexOntario at 1-866-531-2600 for more information.
