New Orleans Pelicans odds to make playoffs, win NBA Championship

Must read

The New Orleans Pelicans complete their annual Mardi Gras road trip this evening with a game against the Memphis Grizzlies. The Pelicans are huge favorites (-9) in the bout against one of the league’s most banged-up rosters. A win at FedEx Forum would see New Orleans start to build another winning streak after its 93-84 victory in Portland over the weekend.

The Pelicans have been one of the NBA’s hottest teams as of late. They’ve won five of their last six games — four of which were away from home — and climbed up to the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference. Only a tiebreaker with the Phoenix Suns is keeping New Orleans out of the 5-seed and it is just 5.5 games back of the West-leading Minnesota Timberwolves.

Willie Green’s squad has successfully navigated the toughest stretch of its schedule to date. Now, the Pelicans return home to face some struggling squads either side of the NBA All-Star Break.

New Orleans remains in the thick of the NBA Playoff race past the midway point of the 2023/24 regular season. The latest odds on FanDuel Sportsbook reflect this reality:

New Orleans Pelicans playoff odds

Odds to win the NBA Finals: +4600

Odds to win the Western Conference: +2300

Odds to win the Southwest Division: -130

Odds to make the NBA Playoffs: -470

Odds to make the NBA Play-In Tournament: -120

As I alluded to earlier, the Pelicans are in the thick of the playoff race. Their odds are heavily juiced to make the playoffs (-470 at FanDuel Sportsbook) and they’re even -120 to make the NBA Play-In Tournament. New Orleans currently holds a 0.5-game lead over the Sacramento Kings, who are the aforementioned tournament’s top seed right now if the season ended today.

It is important to clarify that making the NBA Play-In Tournament does not count as making the playoffs. Only winning the four-team trial means officially making the postseason. For these reasons, there is actually some value in taking the Pelicans to make the play-in tournament, as opposed to the playoffs.

The same goes for the Southwest Division where New Orleans currently holds a one-game lead over the surging Dallas Mavericks (-115). Dallas has strung together four wins in a row as the Mavericks are getting hot at the right time.

The Pelicans do remain longshots to win either the NBA Finals or the Western Conference, though. New Orleans has never reached a Western Conference Finals in its 22-year history as a franchise. In fact, the Pelicans have only made the Western Conference Semifinals twice (2007/08, 2017/18). Therefore, oddsmakers aren’t giving them much of a chance to win the championship (+4600) or conference (+2300).

New Orleans Pelicans upcoming schedule

Monday, Feb. 12: at Memphis Grizzlies

Wednesday, Feb. 14: vs. Washington Wizards
