Indoor tennis dome project not moving forward

An indoor tennis dome planned for Community Park will not be going ahead as planned.

All partners – the City of St. Catharines, Tennis Clubs of Canada, St. Catharines Tennis Alliance and Merritton Lions Club – were looking forward to creating a world class tennis facility, but current economic times created challenges. Unfortunately, Tennis Clubs of Canada cannot enter into a licence agreement with the City to build and operate the facility due to increased construction costs and elevated interest rates.

If new opportunities for an indoor tennis facility present themselves in the future, a subsequent request for proposals (RFP) would be issued by the City.

But several components of the original project are moving ahead.

A fourth court will be added at Community Park and the three existing courts will be upgraded as well. St. Catharines Tennis Alliance is financially contributing to the project cost of the fourth court. In addition, the tennis court lights will be replaced. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-June.

City staff will also continue to work with Tennis Canada on partnership opportunities to fund outdoor tennis court replacements.

Media looking to arrange interviews can contact the City’s Communications division at communications@stcatharines.ca.
