Braintree boys hoops clinches tourney spot: Top South Shore performers for Feb. 12-18

The postseason for high school winter sports is heating up.

Last weekend, the MIAA wrestling sectionals got underway. Soon, track, swimming and gymnastics will jump in the mix. The basketball and hockey seasons are down to the final weeks before the state tournament begins.

Catch up on last week’s action right here. On Sunday, Marshfield boys hockey won the Ed Burns Tournament. For Archbishop Williams boys basketball, Tristan Rodriguez exploded for 42 points to tally his 1,000th career point.

Monday, Feb. 12

BOYS HOCKEY

Dave Pittenger scored two goals and added an assist in Duxbury’s 6-1 win over Hanover. Will Atallah and Brady Walsh each had a goal and an assist. Mike Hussey handed out a pair of assists.

Abington defeated Cohasset/Hull, 4-3, in overtime on Sam McDonald’s winning tally. Hunter Grafton, Evan St. Martin and Cullen Crocker had the other goals in the win. Luke Dunham, Barrett Kelly and Luke Mullen scored in the loss.

Middleboro defeated Stoughton/Brockton, 6-1, as James Joyce had two goals and three assists. Owen Dupont scored the lone goal in the loss.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Celia Benson, Morgan McGathey and Kate Sullivan scored in Thayer’s 5-3 loss to Lawrence.

BOYS BASKETBALL

New Heights defeated Calvary Chapel Academy, 58-32. Cash Babineau scored 13 points in the loss.

Holbrook defeated Boston Collegiate Charter, 67-41. The win was No. 500 for coach Rich Gifford.

Cohasset defeated Randolph, 36-34, behind 13 points from Will Henle and 9 from Jack Cullinan.

Tyler Carini scored 14 points in South Shore Tech’s 54-46 win over Tri-County. Todd Egan added 10.

Braintree defeated Milton, 43-33, and clinched a state-tournament berth. Ethan Elie scored 10 points in the win.

Southeastern defeated Westport, 68-56.

Justin Grimaldi scored 22 points in a 59-58 loss to Sharon for Oliver Ames. Jefferson Smock added 13 points.

Canton defeated Foxboro, 75-63.

Lenny Tangishaka scored 17 points in Thayer’s 74-53 loss to Choate.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Notre Dame Academy defeated Cardinal Spellman, 59-29, behind 21 points from Elle Orlando. Ava Orlando and Lola Griffin each chipped in 10. Lucy LaCara scored 8 points in the loss.

Hailey Iwanski scored 17 points as Middleboro defeated Hull, 73-36. Lily Price added 16. Margot Harper scored 11 in the loss.

Bella Sulfaro had a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) as Blue Hills defeated Randolph, 46-25. Ally Johnson chipped in 13 points while freshman Jenna Lehane had a career-high 7 points.

Dylan Hurley and Jenna Mishou each scored 9 points in Whitman-Hanson’s 51-29 loss to Bishop Fenwick.

Freshman Madison McDonald had a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) in Abington’s 54-40 loss to Apponequet. Ella Williamson scored 13 points while Rebecca Rix had 14 rebounds.

East Bridgewater lost to Sandwich, 54-52, in overtime. Jenna Oman scored 23 points.

Falmouth defeated Hanover, 37-32. Noey Giardina scored 16 points in the loss.

Fontbonne defeated Ursuline, 54-40, behind Lily Blow’s third consecutive double-double (19 points, 15 rebounds, 4 blocks). Tressa Murphy and Alana MacLean each had 10 points.

New Heights lost to Prospect Hill Academy, 43-34, in the quarterfinals of MCSAO State Tournament. Jizzelle Stephney scored 22 points in the loss while Naziiah Herisse added 13.
