Dragons firing blanks

Wales begin a new era against Croatia without Gareth Bale after his retirement following their underwhelming performance at the World Cup in Qatar.

Bale scored his country’s only goal in Wales’s first appearance at the tournament since 1958 and he will leave a massive hole in Robert Page’s side.

Croatia finished third in Qatar and their defeat to eventual winners Argentina in the quarter-final is their only loss in their past 12 games.

In that run, they have kept five clean sheets, including against strong sides such as France and Morocco.

Next year’s European Championship may be the last chance for Croatia’s golden generation to actually win something so they will be highly motivated to record a convincing victory in their opening qualifying game.

Croatia vs Wales tip 1: Croatia win to nil @ 7/5 with DAZN Bet

Livaja the man in form

Marko Livaja may have only made three starts for Croatia at the World Cup but he could establish himself as boss Zlatko Dalic’s first-choice centre forward in this qualification campaign.

The 29-year-old has been in wonderful form for Hajduk Split this season, with 17 league goals, including six in nine games since the World Cup.

In Qatar, he scored in Croatia’s 4-1 win over Canada – although he is perhaps best remembered for missing a penalty in comical style in the shootout win over Japan in the round of 16.

The former Inter Milan striker has four goals in 20 games for his country, including six starts, and he should be confident of finding the net against Wales at the Poljud stadium, Hajduk’s home ground.

Goals at a premium

As we do not expect Wales to get on the scoresheet without Bale, we are essentially saying Croatia will score under 2.5 goals by adding under 2.5 goals to our bet builder.

The 2018 World Cup runners-up have never been renowned for scoring many and under 2.5 goals would have come in for half of their World Cup games.

The only time Croatia have scored over 2.5 goals in their previous eight games was the 4-1 win over Canada in Qatar.

We have also added over 8.5 corners to our bet builder – and again, looking at recent form, this has a high chance of landing.

In Wales’s previous five games, there have been over 8.5 corners in two of them. But for Croatia, the bet would have landed in 11 of their past 17 matches.

With Croatia expected to dominate, we can be confident about this part of the bet builder.
